According to a study released Thursday, middle-aged women need to be active — or stay active — until age 55 to enjoy a better life in old age.

Australian scientists studied 11,300 women who were in their late 40s or early 50s for 15 years. The women fit into one of three categories-

  1. They exercised at least the recommended 150 minutes per week.
  2. They did not work much in the beginning but started when they reached 55, 60 or 65. Or they never exercised that much.
  3. They measured how good people’s lives were by asking them questions about their physical health and mental health. The questions were about how well they can do things and how they feel.

For women who exercised 150 minutes per week continuously, and who began to reach the fitness threshold at age 55, the study authors said, the average physical health score was three points higher than women who did not meet the physical activity guidelines.

“Our study shows that women being active in midlife is important for increasing their physical health later in life. “Women should increase their activity levels to meet guidelines by age 55,” the authors wrote in the study published in the journal PLOS Medicine.

Women who consistently exercised for 150 minutes per week, and who began reaching the fitness threshold at age 55, had an average physical health score three points higher than women who did not meet physical activity guidelines, the study authors said.

The researchers found that the effect of physical activity on physical health score was “significant” even after accounting for socio-economic factors and pre-existing health conditions.

However, there was “no significant association” between physical activity and mental health scores.

To stay healthy, adults should try to do 150 minutes of exercise every week. This could be things like walking or biking. Also, they should do activities that make their muscles stronger at least two days a week.

Moderate-intensity activity is characterized by exercises that you can say but can’t sing the words to a favorite song.

Examples include jogging, participating in hydro sports, biking in non-mountainous settings, playing doubles tennis, and mowing the lawn.

You don’t have to do all the exercises together. You can break it up into smaller chunks, like 30 minutes each time, and do it five days a week.
