SAG Awards: De’Wayne Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards
De’Wayne Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, solidifying her position as an Oscar favorite.
Randolph’s performance in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers was a breakthrough role for the 37-year-old actor. Now it looks like he’s ready to win an Academy Award.
Randolph said, “I want to say to all the actors who are still waiting for their chance behind the scenes: Life can change in a day.” “The question is not if, but when. Keep going.”
The 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, streamed live for the first time on Netflix, kicked off on Saturday, with Oscar momentum for major nominees “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.” The ceremony, without a host, began at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
Idris Elba joked, “Personally, I can’t wait to get home and have Netflix recommend this show to me based on everything else I’m watching myself.”
After more than 20 years of airing on TNT and TBS and declining viewership, Netflix acquired the rights to broadcast the SAG Awards in early 2023. This meant many different rules, including no advertising and no offensive language allowed. Alba opened the show on stage and proposed a delicate dance.
“Don’t say anything you wouldn’t say in front of Oprah,” Elba said, quickly adding an expletive.
This year’s SAG Awards come after months of a bruising strike in which the SAG-AFTRA union fought a bitter battle over a number of issues. Many of the suspensions occurred in the wake of changes in the film and television industry due to changes in streaming and Netflix’s leadership.
It didn’t take long for the night’s hosts to earn their rewards. Ali Wong, who showed off one of the hottest looks on the red carpet, won best female actor in a TV movie or limited series for the Netflix series “Beef.” Later, co-star Steven Yeun also won the award.
“The Bear” also won the award for Best Comedy Series, with Jeremy Alan White and Ayo Adebiri winning the award.
The new streaming platform will surely shed even more light on one of the most-watched predictors of the Academy Awards. Oscar voting ends on Tuesday. The removal of ad breaks made some notable adjustments. Immediately following their wins, several winners were interviewed backstage – sometimes glamorously, sometimes awkwardly – by red carpet co-host Tan France.
Pedro Pascal looked stunned as he accepted the award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series for “This Is Us.”
