The highly anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” has released its inaugural trailer courtesy of Focus Features. This gripping drama chronicles the meteoric and tragically short life of a legendary British soul music legend.

Marisa Abella, a rising UK talent best known for her role in “Industry,” takes on the challenging portrayal of Winehouse, best known for her roles in “Nowhere Boy” and “50 Shades,” in the film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Produced by Monumental Pictures and StudioCanal, “Back to Black” will premiere in the U.K. on April 12. and Ireland, followed by a U.S. release on May 17 through Focus Features.

The trailer also gives glimpses of her relationship with her future ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil (played by Jack O’Connell) and her father Mitch Winehouse (played by Eddie Marsan). Janice, Amy’s mother, is played by Juliet Cowan, while Lesley Manville plays Cynthia, Amy’s grandmother.

The production of the project received support from Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing, as well as the Amy Winehouse estate. The endorsement gave Taylor-Johnson full access to Winehouse’s acclaimed hit catalog.
