COVID-19 : Understanding COVID-19 Headaches and The New JN1 Variant

COVID-19

Since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic, health experts have observed a wide range of symptoms associated with the virus, the most common being headache. These headaches are often noted as one of the early and long-lasting symptoms in infected people. They are particularly common among certain groups, although they can occur in anyone infected with the virus.

Headache symptoms associated with Covid

According to a 2022 study, headaches associated with COVID-19 are usually of moderate to severe intensity. They often affect both sides of the head, resembling tension headaches or migraines. Activation of the trigeminal nerve (the largest cranial nerve) by the virus and the inflammation it causes is thought to be the main trigger for these headaches.

Treatment and duration

Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually effective in treating these headaches, which can last several weeks during the acute phase of the virus. However, some people may experience persistent headaches, which may be a sign of “long COVID.”

Perseverance and Long Covid

Interestingly, while long-term COVID headaches often resolve within three months of illness, they can persist for some time. These persistent symptoms are part of a broader set of neurological symptoms associated with long-term COVID, which can include loss of taste/smell, brain fog, dizziness, abnormal movements, depression and difficulty concentrating.

In parallel, a variant of the COVID-19 virus, JN 1, was identified, which causes typical COVID-19 symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion and fatigue. There is currently no definitive evidence of different or more severe symptoms caused by this variant. The importance of vaccination in controlling the virus is paramount, especially in light of low vaccination rates and the development of antiviral treatments. The need to take precautions, especially for high-risk individuals, to prevent the spread of this variant is emphasized.
