The upcoming Netflix series is a live-action reimagining of Nickelodeon’s popular animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender. Throughout her journey, Aang teams up with Water Tribe siblings Katara and Sokka, as well as other formidable characters.

Series showrunner, executive producer and screenwriter Albert Kim said deciding what to cut from the animated series was one of the most difficult decisions to make. “It was probably one of the most difficult decisions to make, figuring out what we could and should leave out to fit it into an eight-episode format,” Kim told Inverse. “This is a case of looking at the overall flow of the first season of the original and seeing where certain themes emerged.”

The Netflix version may be short, but the showrunners were promised to “travel through the first season of the original series.” He added: “This was a journey for children to travel from one end of the world to the other, and along the way the lessons they learned and the messages they passed on to the people they met.”

Another major difference between the original Nickelodeon show and the Netflix version of him is that creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are not involved in the upcoming production. In August 2020, the two parted ways with the live-action version due to creative differences with Netflix.

DiMartino explained on his personal website that he and Brian joined the project back in 2018 as the top bosses, managing everything from behind the scenes. “In our joint announcement of the series, Netflix said they respect our vision for this retelling and are committed to supporting the production of the series. And we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to come out on top.” “Unfortunately, things did not go as we expected.”

“The normal operation of the project has created a negative and uncooperative environment,” Konietzko said in a statement on Instagram. He added, “To be clear, this was not a simple case of us not getting our way. Mike and I are collaborative people. All ideas need to come from us.” As long as we feel those ideas are in line with the spirit and integrity of Avatar, we’re happy to embrace them. However, we ultimately feel that the direction of the series is I came to the belief that I would not be able to lead in a certain direction.
